// ROI vs EMV

ROI: did it make money?

Return on investment compares attributed revenue (and profit) to what the campaign actually cost, creator fees plus production, paid media, usage rights and every other line item. It's a real commercial number.

EMV: what would the exposure have cost?

Estimated Media Value is a comparative estimate, what similar reach or engagement would cost to buy as paid ads. It is not revenue and methodologies vary between providers, so treat it as a benchmark, never as return.

Cost should include creator fees, production, usage, paid media and other campaign costs.
WHAT'S THE CPM HERE FOR?

CPM is the paid-media rate you're comparing the campaign against, e.g. what you'd normally pay to buy this platform's ads. It drives the EMV estimate.

It's intentionally separate from what you actually spent, that efficiency shows up as "Actual Campaign CPM" in the results below.

What's the difference between ROI and EMV in influencer marketing?

ROI measures actual business return, revenue or profit against what you spent. EMV estimates what the reach or engagement would have cost as paid media. EMV is directional, not a financial return, and the two should always be reported separately.

Where do the CPM and CPE rates come from?

You enter them directly in Step 1 and Step 2, there's no hidden default. Use your own historical paid-media costs or current ad-platform data; CPV is calculated automatically as CPM ÷ 1,000.

Can I track more than one creator or piece of content?

The on-page calculator estimates a single campaign total. The downloadable Excel workbook includes a multi-row performance table so you can log results per creator or deliverable and roll them up automatically.

Is this free?

Yes, no signup, no paywall. If it's useful, we also have a free CPM calculator, package builder and media kit generator.

How is EMV actually calculated?

EMV here is view value plus engagement value: (views ÷ 1,000) × your CPM, plus engagements × your cost-per-engagement. Both benchmarks are yours to set in Step 1 and Step 2, there's no built-in industry default baked in.

What should count as campaign cost?

Everything it took to run the campaign: creator fees, production, usage rights, paid amplification and any other line item. Leaving costs out inflates ROI and understates how efficient the campaign actually was.

What's a good EMV multiple or ROI to aim for?

There's no universal benchmark, it depends on category, campaign goals and how the exposure was priced. Use the multiple to compare your own campaigns over time rather than against an external target, and always report EMV alongside actual ROI, not instead of it.

How is this different from the CPM calculator or package builder?

The CPM calculator and package builder price a deal before it runs. This tool looks backwards: it estimates what a completed campaign's exposure would have cost as paid media, and, if you add revenue and margin, whether the campaign paid for itself.
